About Mrs. Leavitt
Dear Parents,
I just wanted to welcome you to our classroom. 5th grade is an exciting year that is full of wonderful surprises along the way. My main goal for each of your children is next year at this time; your child will only have one worry… their locker. I want the academics and organization needed for middle school success to be in place, so that they can soar when they start the 6th grade. I hope together as a team we can make this happen for each and every child in the class. I know we can do it!
I know some of you, but many of you are new. Let me tell a little about myself. I grew up on the northeast side where my dad and 3 siblings still reside. I moved to the south side of Indianapolis when I married my husband Mike Leavitt in 2003. Mike is a teacher at Center Grove Alternative Academy which is located at the old Maple Grove site. Mike and I have 2 children: Emma and Michael. Emma is in 3rd grade and Michael is in 1st grade here at Maple Grove. We are so happy to not only teach here at Center Grove, but also send our children to these wonderful schools as well. Together, my family enjoys the outdoors and the water. Whether it is the pool, beach, or the lake, we all enjoying swimming. We also enjoy sports: watching and playing. Family is a huge portion of my life and I am proud to call them my own.
My teaching background began 17 years ago as a school technology coordinator and middle school teacher on the north side of Indianapolis. The following year I moved to the Carmel Clay Schools where I taught 5th grade and coached freshman volleyball for 5 years. During that time, I continued my love of technology and was a part of the Indiana Technology Fellowship. In 2003, I was blessed to get the 5th grade position at Maple Grove. Over the course of 11 years at Center Grove, I have enjoyed coaching volleyball at CGMSN for 5 years, began the MGTV News, participated in the Teacher Leadership Academy, and have grown with 11 wonderful groups of 5th graders. These past few years were full of many surprises! In November of 2011, my students and I entered and completed the NFL Play 60 Challenge and were selected to go the NFL Experience during Super Bowl Week. We were also given a $2500 grant from the American Heart Association for our soccer goals and other fitness equipment here at Maple Grove. To top it all off, I have had the unexpected honor of being the 2012 and 2014 Teacher of the Year Award for Maple Grove. Wow! I am still shocked. What blessings these past few years have given! Now, I am ready to pick right up and continue on this wave of excitement.
In closing, I want to reiterate something that will always be told to your children today. We are a family here in Room 36. I will see your children in the next 10 months more than I will see my own. Together, not separate, we will succeed. I ask each of you to join our Rm. 36 family. Together, we will see our children rise to a greater level than we ever thought possible. Please feel free to call or email me at any time. I am here to help!
Thanks so much for all you do at home on a daily basis!
